The Golden Rule

My grandmother always taught me that when it comes to hospitality all you have to do is follow the “Golden Rule.” Just treat others the way you want to be treated. Who among us doesn’t love arriving to a hotel room outfitted with more than two large fluffy towels, an abundance of toiletries, and a large bottle of water perched on the nightstand? We immediately form a high opinion of the company whose name is on the large sign out front. We sense that somewhere in the marketing group of this company is a human being who instinctively knows what will make us happy.

Recently, my husband and I were guests at a friend’s house. These friends always blow us away with their “over-the-top” hospitality. We arrived to find a little doorhanger on the guest room door with our names and a warm welcome. Now this wasn’t because our hosts might forget who we are…it was because they wanted us to know they were happy we were there and had lovingly prepared their guest room just for us. They wanted us to feel welcome, and boy, did we! My grandmother would have been thrilled.

I love our Lee Real Estate homeowners. They fully embrace the Golden Rule and get creative with their hospitality. Guests can arrive to an abundance of fluffy towels and yummy soaps, beach gear galore, boardgames and beach books, nice dishes and plentiful wine glasses. Some of them go over the top – a fluffy robe hanging beside every shower, a chilled bottle of wine or a large bouquet of flowers on the table. Whatever level the hospitality, the message is the same – “we are so happy you chose our home, we want you to have the time of your life and we would love for you to return next year.” This high level of hospitality never goes unnoticed. I’ve heard story after story about how long-term relationships and even friendships develop between our homeowners and tenants. Our Lee Real Estate rental agents (yours truly included!) pride ourselves in being part of the Golden Rule tradition. Each year we thoughtfully curate an array of personalized welcome gifts to greet each guest at their rental home. Perhaps more importantly, we make ourselves available throughout the tenants stay to serve as their source of local knowledge, guidance and assistance.

As a courtesy…and a “thank you” to the homeowner and our team for providing them an incredible Nantucket experience…our tenants reciprocate with their own version of “the Golden Rule.” They make every effort to treat their rental home as they would their own and leave it exactly the way they found it (in some cases even better!) Tenants strip beds, start laundry and load the dishwasher – all because they are fully aware that prior to their arrival another tenant did exactly the same thing so the house would be ready on time for their arrival. It’s teamwork, camaraderie and it is the Nantucket way.

If you haven’t booked your Nantucket rental home for this season, please give me a call (508- 901-9890) or send me a note (shellie@leerealestate.com). It would be my pleasure to assist you…and there is a homeowner just waiting to share their home and live out the Golden Rule.Discover how Nantucket homeowners and guests create unforgettable experiences through thoughtful hospitality, lasting relationships, and the simple principle of treating others the way you want to be treated.
