Dog Friendly Spots on Nantucket To Visit

If you’re the kind of traveler who wouldn’t dream of leaving your pup behind, you’re in luck! Nantucket is not just dog-friendly, it’s practically dog heaven. If you’re planning a weekend escape or a longer island stay, there are countless ways for you and your four-legged friend to explore, unwind, and make memories. From beaches and trails to restaurants and rentals, the island is full of hidden (and not-so-hidden) gems for pet lovers.

If your dog loves the beach as much as you do, then Nantucket Beaches are the ideal destination. Your four-legged friend is even welcome on all the shuttle buses (but not on the seats)! Leashed dogs are welcome on a large number of the island's beaches on both the calm north shore and wilder south and east shores. During high season (Apr. 1 - Aug. 31), dogs are only permitted before 9:00 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m. in all designated lifeguard areas.

Dogs (and their owners) are never permitted within dune vegetation, protected wildlife areas, marsh grass or other fenced-off areas. Dionis Beach, for example, offers calm, shallow waters and wide-open sand ideal for off-leash runs and games of fetch. Jetties Beach, typically bustling in the summer, becomes peaceful and serene in the slower seasons, making it a great stop for morning walks and salty air. As always, be mindful of posted restrictions and wildlife conservation areas, and never forget a leash just in case.

Once your pup has had a dip in the ocean, stretch your legs on some of Nantucket’s most scenic trails. The ‘Sconset Bluff Walk is a must, offering incredible views of the ocean and Sankaty Head Lighthouse while weaving through a charming coastal neighborhood. For those looking for a more adventurous hike, head out to Altar Rock or explore the rolling hills at Sanford Farm and Ram Pasture. These walks offer an ideal blend of open space and leash-friendly space, giving your dog the freedom to sniff and roam while you enjoy the natural beauty of the island.

Of course, all that walking and swimming works up an appetite. Thankfully, Nantucket’s food scene is just as welcoming to pets as it is to people. Cisco Brewers is a lively and iconic stop with outdoor seating, live music, and plenty of space for dogs to join in the fun. Looking for a cozy patio brunch? Black-Eyed Susan’s serves up delicious meals and allows dogs on their charming outdoor patio, plus, it's BYOB. Something Natural is another local gem, perfect for lunch on their picnic-filled lawn, and Handlebar Café makes for a relaxed morning coffee stop with outdoor seating that’s dog-approved. For a sweet treat, Jack + Charlie’s Ice Cream offers pup cones with Milk Bone toppings.

Finding a place to sleep where dogs are welcome doesn’t have to be a challenge. At Lee Real Estate, we understand that dogs are part of the family, and we’re happy to help you find a pet-friendly rental that checks every box. Whether you’re dreaming of a cottage close to trails or a house with a big backyard for fetch sessions, we’ll match you with a property where everyone can relax and enjoy the island together.

And when it comes to things to do, Tupancy Links is a local favorite. This former golf course is now public conservation land and one of the best off-leash areas on the island. It’s a go-to gathering place for local dog owners and offers incredible views over Nantucket Sound.

Nantucket’s charm isn’t limited to cobblestone streets and hydrangea-lined paths. It’s in the way the island welcomes every member of the family, even the ones with paws! A peaceful beach morning to trail adventures and relaxing patio lunches, it’s a destination designed for making memories with your best furry friend by your side. If you’re planning a trip and thinking about bringing your dog, let us help you find the perfect pet-friendly home base. Because a vacation isn’t complete unless everyone (tails included) is there to enjoy it.
